Swedish Black Chicken

A Rare Swedish Breed With an Unmistakable Black Appearance

The Swedish Black Chicken, also known as Svart Hona, is a rare poultry breed with an appearance unlike most chickens you encounter.

Its dark pigmentation extends beyond the feathers. The breed is known for dark skin, comb, wattles, beak, and legs, creating the distinctive appearance that has made the Swedish Black Chicken so interesting to poultry keepers. Research into the breed links this pigmentation to a genetic variant involving the EDN3 locus.

At Rookcrest Livestock, the Swedish Black Chicken is part of our collection of rare and specialty poultry.

For those who appreciate uncommon breeds, distinctive characteristics, and poultry with a story behind it, the Swedish Black Chicken deserves a closer look.

What Makes the Swedish Black Chicken Different?

Some chickens are recognized by their crest.

Others by their feather patterns.

The Swedish Chicken stands out because of its deep dark pigmentation.

The breed is associated with black feathers as well as dark pigmentation of the skin and other tissues. Most birds have dark coloration throughout their visible appearance, although variation can occur within the breed.

This gives the Swedish Chicken an appearance that is easy to recognize.

Look closely and you can see how the dark coloration continues from the feathers to the face, comb, legs, and skin.

It is not simply a black-feathered chicken.

That distinction is part of what makes the breed so interesting.

The Swedish Black Chicken Has a Story

The breed is known as Svart Hona in Sweden.

Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna is another name associated with the breed, connecting it to Bohuslän and Dalsland in western Sweden.

Historical accounts trace the surviving Swedish population to small groups of birds in western Sweden. Research published on Swedish local breeds describes the breed as originating from northern Bohuslän, close to the Norwegian border.

The breed also has a fascinating history of preservation.

Its population became small enough that conservation work became important to keeping the breed alive. Genetic research has since helped document the characteristics of the Swedish Black Chicken and its relationship to other chickens that share the dark-pigmentation trait.

That history gives this chicken significance beyond its appearance.

A Distinctive Swedish Breed

The Swedish Chicken belongs to a group of Swedish local breeds that developed within traditional farm settings.

The breed is relatively small compared with many modern production chickens. Published breed information gives typical weights of roughly 1 to 1.5 kg for females and 1.5 to 2 kg for males.

Its appearance is defined by several recognizable features:

• Predominantly black plumage
• Dark skin
• Dark comb and wattles
• Dark beak
• Dark legs
• Distinctive pigmentation
• A compact Swedish landrace background

These characteristics give the breed a very different presence from ordinary black-feathered chickens.

The Dark Pigmentation of the Swedish Black Chicken

One of the most interesting features of the Swedish Black Chicken is its pigmentation.

Scientific research has examined the genetic basis behind the dark pigmentation found in Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna.

Researchers identified a complex rearrangement involving the EDN3 gene that is associated with the breed’s dermal hyperpigmentation. Similar pigmentation mechanisms occur in several other chicken breeds.

This helps explain why the Swedish Black Chicken can appear dark not only in its feathers but also in areas such as the skin, comb, and legs.

It is one of the defining characteristics that separates Svart Hona from an ordinary chicken with black plumage.

Swedish Black Chicken vs. an Ordinary Black Chicken

A black chicken is not automatically a Swedish Black Chicken.

Many chicken breeds can have black feathers.

The Swedish Black Chicken is different because its characteristic pigmentation extends beyond the plumage.

The breed’s dark skin and other pigmented tissues are part of its identity. Scientific studies have documented this trait within the Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna population.

That is why the breed attracts so much interest from people who specifically seek unusual poultry.
