Narragansett Turkey

Narragansett Turkeys are a historic American heritage turkey variety known for their distinctive gray, black, white, and buff-colored plumage.

They are one of the better-known traditional turkey varieties developed in the United States and have a long connection with small farms and pasture-based poultry keeping.

Narragansett Turkeys are valued for their attractive appearance, useful body size, natural mating ability, active foraging behavior, and role in preserving traditional turkey genetics.

At Rookcrest Livestock, Narragansett are part of our selection of heritage and specialty poultry for customers who want birds with a strong connection to American poultry history.

What Makes Narragansett Turkeys Different?

The plumage is one of the easiest ways to recognize a Narragansett Turkey.

Their feathers combine shades of:

• Black
• Gray
• White
• Buff
• Soft silver-gray

The overall appearance creates a distinctive pattern that separates Narragansetts from varieties such as Bourbon Red, Blue Slate, Black Spanish, and Chocolate Turkey.

Narragansetts are also known for their balanced body structure.

Unlike extremely large commercial turkeys selected primarily for breast production, traditional Narragansett retain characteristics that make them useful for natural mating and outdoor production.

Narragansett Turkey History

Narragansett have deep roots in American poultry history.

The variety developed in the United States from early turkey populations that included birds descended from Mexican wild turkeys and domesticated birds brought to North America by European settlers.

The Narragansett pattern became established as a recognized turkey variety in the northeastern United States.

Rhode Island played an important role in the variety’s history, and the turkey takes its name from Narragansett Bay.

Narragansett became popular with farmers because they combined useful size with good production qualities.

They were used for both meat and breeding and became particularly associated with traditional farm flocks.

As commercial turkey production expanded, many traditional varieties declined.

Narragansetts survived because breeders and small farms continued to maintain them.

Today, they remain an important part of America’s heritage turkey history.

Narragansett Turkey Appearance

A mature Narragansett has a distinctive combination of gray, black, white, and buff coloring.

Common characteristics include:

• Gray or silver-gray body feathers
• Black markings
• White feather edging
• Buff or cream-colored highlights
• Broad body
• Long legs
• Large tail
• Red head and neck
• Blue or pale skin tones that can appear around the head

The exact pattern can vary between individual birds.

The combination of colors gives the Narragansett its recognizable appearance.

Narragansett Turkey Size

Narragansett are medium-to-large heritage turkeys.

The Livestock Conservancy lists mature weights of approximately:

• Toms: 22 to 28 pounds
• Hens: 12 to 16 pounds

Individual birds can weigh more or less depending on genetics, age, nutrition, and management.

Their size gives farmers a substantial bird without relying on the extremely heavy body type associated with some modern commercial turkey strains.

Narragansett Turkey Eggs

Narragansett hens produce relatively large turkey eggs.

The eggs are generally cream-colored to light brown and can have small speckles.

Egg production varies with age, genetics, nutrition, season, and management.

Heritage hens can also reproduce naturally, making them useful for breeding programs where maintaining a self-sustaining flock matters.

Hens that brood and raise poults naturally may produce fewer eggs for collection because they spend part of the season incubating and raising young.

Narragansett Turkey Poults

Narragansett poults are active young birds that require careful management during their early development.

A good brooding setup should include:

• Clean, dry bedding
• Suitable warmth
• Fresh drinking water
• Turkey starter feed
• Adequate ventilation
• Protection from drafts
• Protection from predators

As poults grow, they need more space.

Providing room to move helps young turkeys develop strong legs and become accustomed to their surroundings.

Once they are sufficiently feathered and weather conditions are suitable, they can gradually transition to larger housing and outdoor areas.

Narragansett Turkey Temperament

Narragansett are generally regarded as active and manageable heritage birds, although temperament can differ between individuals.

Their behavior is influenced by genetics, flock structure, handling, and environment.

Young birds that receive calm, regular handling can become easier to manage around people.

For breeding programs, temperament should be considered alongside health, structure, size, feather pattern, and reproductive performance.

Narragansett Turkeys for Pasture

Narragansett are well suited to pasture-based systems when properly managed.

Heritage turkeys retain strong foraging behavior and can spend considerable time exploring an outdoor environment.

They may consume insects, grasses, seeds, and other naturally available foods while continuing to require a complete poultry ration.

A suitable pasture setup should include:

• Secure fencing
• Shade
• Clean drinking water
• Appropriate supplemental feed
• Weather protection
• Dry resting areas
• Predator protection

Rotating outdoor areas can also help manage vegetation and reduce the buildup of waste in one location.

Narragansett Turkey Breeding

Narragansett are particularly interesting for breeders because they retain natural reproductive characteristics associated with heritage turkey production.

When choosing breeding birds, consider:

• Correct Narragansett plumage
• Good body structure
• Strong legs and feet
• Healthy growth
• Good overall health
• Natural mating ability
• Suitable temperament
• Productive hens

Breeders should avoid choosing birds based on appearance alone.

A strong breeding flock should combine the desired color pattern with sound structure, health, and reproductive performance.

Keeping records of parentage can also help breeders track their flock over multiple generations.

Narragansett Turkey Conservation

Narragansett is recognized as a heritage turkey variety by The Livestock Conservancy.

The variety’s conservation story reflects the broader decline of traditional turkey varieties during the rise of large commercial turkey production.

Maintaining Narragansett breeding flocks helps preserve genetic characteristics that differ from modern commercial strains.

The variety is especially valuable for farmers and poultry keepers interested in traditional production systems, natural reproduction, and heritage poultry conservation.
