Deathlayer Chicks for Sale

Deathlayer chicks for sale are a distinctive choice for poultry keepers interested in rare European chicken breeds. Also known as Westfälische Totleger, Deathlayers originated in Westphalia, Germany, where they were valued as active farm chickens with a reputation for steady egg production. Their unusual name often attracts attention, but their history, appearance, and usefulness as laying birds are what make the breed worth learning about.

At Rookcrest Livestock, buyers interested in Deathlayer chicks can learn about the breed’s characteristics and the care young birds need as they grow. Availability, age, color variety, and other purchase details should be confirmed before ordering.

What Makes Deathlayer Chicks Distinctive?

Deathlayers are known for their alert behavior, strong foraging instincts, and finely patterned feathers. The breed is commonly found in two color varieties: gold penciled and silver penciled. As chicks mature, their adult plumage and characteristic appearance become more apparent.

Key breed characteristics include:

• Origin: Westphalia, Germany
• Alternative name: Westfälische Totleger
• Common color varieties: Gold penciled and silver penciled
• Egg color: White
• Comb type: Rose comb
• General temperament: Active, alert, and sometimes flighty
• Main purpose: Egg production and heritage poultry keeping

Deathlayers are energetic birds that benefit from enough room to move, forage, and explore. Their alert nature means they may need patient, consistent handling to become comfortable around people.

Raising Deathlayer Chicks

Young Deathlayers need a clean, secure brooder with a suitable heat source, fresh water, and a balanced starter feed formulated for chicks. Keep the brooder dry and well ventilated while avoiding cold drafts. As the chicks grow and develop their feathers, their heat requirements change, so conditions should be adjusted according to their age and behavior.

Provide enough space for movement and access to feed and water without crowding. Monitor the chicks regularly for signs of poor appetite, unusual inactivity, or difficulty moving, and seek qualified poultry-care advice if concerns arise.

When they are fully feathered and ready for outdoor housing, provide a secure coop and a well-protected run. Deathlayers are capable foragers and can be lively flyers, so appropriate fencing and secure roosting areas are useful parts of their housing plan.

Egg Production and Adult Characteristics

Deathlayers are primarily valued as laying chickens rather than meat birds. Mature hens produce white-shelled eggs, with published breed references commonly reporting around 180–200 eggs per year under suitable conditions. Actual production varies with genetics, age, feed, health, season, and management.

The breed’s name is associated with the historical reputation of hens maintaining egg production over a long period. It should not be taken as a promise of daily laying throughout a hen’s life. Like other chickens, Deathlayers have natural pauses in production, including during molting.

Adult birds are relatively light-bodied compared with heavier dual-purpose breeds. Their gold or silver penciled feather patterns, rose combs, and active behavior make them appealing to keepers who appreciate older European poultry varieties.

Are Deathlayer Chicks Right for Your Flock?

Deathlayers may suit poultry keepers who have space for active birds and an interest in preserving or raising less common chicken breeds. They may be less suitable for someone seeking a very calm bird for a small, confined space.

Before purchasing, consider your brooder setup, long-term housing, local climate, predator protection, and plans for raising male and female chicks if they are sold unsexed. Confirm the sexing policy, age, color variety, current availability, and delivery arrangements with the seller before placing an order.
