Ayam Cemani for Sale: Breed Characteristics, Eggs and Care

Ayam Cemani chicken for sale is one of the most distinctive chicken breeds in the world. Originating in Indonesia, it is known for its extensive black pigmentation, which extends beyond the feathers to the skin, comb, wattles, beak, and legs. In good light, its glossy black plumage can reveal a subtle greenish sheen.

For poultry keepers who appreciate unusual breeds, Ayam Cemani offers something different from an ordinary black-feathered chicken. Its appearance is linked to a genetic trait called fibromelanosis, which causes increased pigmentation in many body tissues.

At Rookcrest Livestock, we focus on specialty poultry for people interested in distinctive breeds, breeding projects, and diverse farm flocks. If you are considering Ayam Cemani, understanding its characteristics and care requirements is a useful first step.

What Makes Ayam Cemani Different?

The defining feature of Ayam Cemani is the extent of its dark pigmentation. Unlike many chickens that have black feathers but lighter-colored skin and legs, Cemani is recognized for its dark coloration across much more of the body.

Typical characteristics include:

• Glossy black plumage, sometimes showing a greenish sheen
• Black skin and legs
• Black comb and wattles
• A dark beak and generally dark eyes
• A medium-sized body with an upright appearance

The genetic condition known as fibromelanosis is responsible for this unusual pigmentation. It distinguishes the breed from chickens such as the Black Australorp, which can have black feathers without the same extensive dark coloration throughout the body.

Pigmentation can vary between individual birds, so buyers interested in breeding or exhibition should assess the whole bird rather than rely on feather color alone.

Ayam Cemani History and Origin

Ayam Cemani originated in Indonesia and is closely associated with Java, particularly the Temanggung area of Central Java. The breed developed within Indonesian poultry-keeping traditions before attracting wider international interest.

Its unusual appearance eventually drew the attention of poultry enthusiasts and breeders outside Indonesia. Dutch breeder Jan Steverink is commonly associated with introducing the breed to Europe during the 1990s, helping increase its visibility among European specialty poultry keepers.

Today, Ayam Cemani is recognized internationally as a specialty breed valued for its distinctive pigmentation, heritage, and breeding characteristics.

Appearance and Plumage

A well-pigmented Ayam Cemani has dark feathers, skin, legs, comb, and wattles. Its plumage may appear uniformly black at first glance, but sunlight can reveal a metallic green or beetle-green sheen.

When assessing a bird, consider more than the intensity of its color. Feather condition, body structure, movement, overall health, and temperament also matter.

Individual birds may show some variation, and a dark appearance alone does not establish pedigree or breeding quality. If you are purchasing birds for a breeding program, ask about their parentage and any records available from the breeder.

Ayam Cemani Size and Growth

Ayam Cemani is a medium-sized chicken rather than a giant breed. Males generally grow larger than females, although mature size depends on the line, genetics, nutrition, and management.

Some descriptions place mature roosters at approximately 2–2.5 kg and hens at around 1.5–2 kg. These figures should be treated as general estimates rather than guaranteed weights for every bird.

Young Cemani develop gradually, and their adult appearance becomes clearer as their feathers and body structure mature. Consistent nutrition and appropriate housing support healthy growth.

Ayam Cemani Eggs: Color and Production

Despite the breed’s unusual appearance, Ayam Cemani eggs are not black. They are generally described as cream to lightly tinted or pale brown, with some variation between hens and sources.

Cemani hens lay eggs, but the breed is not primarily known for high commercial egg production. Laying performance varies with age, genetics, nutrition, health, season, lighting, and general management.

If your main goal is a large supply of eggs, compare Cemani with breeds specifically developed for laying. For many Cemani keepers, the greater attraction is the bird’s appearance and its role in a specialty breeding flock.

Ayam Cemani Hatching Eggs

Fertile Ayam Cemani eggs can be used to hatch chicks when they come from a healthy, appropriately managed breeding flock. Successful hatching depends on fertility, egg handling, storage, incubation conditions, and the health of the parent birds.

Anyone planning to incubate Cemani eggs should have suitable equipment and understand the requirements for temperature, humidity, turning, and hatch monitoring.

Breeding records are particularly useful if you want to maintain consistent pigmentation. They help you track parentage and evaluate the characteristics passed from one generation to the next.

Hatching eggs are not guaranteed to produce birds with identical pigmentation or other traits. Results depend on the parent stock and the genetic variation within the breeding line.

Ayam Cemani Chicks and Young Birds

Cemani chicks require the same essential care as other young chickens. Provide a clean brooder, suitable warmth, fresh drinking water, balanced chick starter feed, and enough room to move comfortably.

As the chicks grow, observe their development and adjust their housing as needed. Their dark pigmentation may be visible early, but it is important not to judge future breeding quality on color alone.

When selecting young birds, consider:

• Pigmentation and feather development
• Body structure and leg development
• Growth and general health
• Activity and temperament
• Available parentage information

Not every chick will develop the same way. If you intend to breed Cemani, evaluate birds as they mature and maintain records rather than making early decisions based on appearance alone.

Temperament and Flock Compatibility

Ayam Cemani temperament varies between individual birds and breeding lines. They can be active and alert, while some roosters may become territorial or protective.

Provide adequate space, suitable shelter, and careful supervision when introducing unfamiliar birds. Avoid assuming that all Cemani will behave alike or that birds will automatically be compatible because they belong to the same breed.

Calm, consistent handling can help chickens become accustomed to people. Choose flock arrangements according to individual behavior, space, and welfare needs.

Caring for Ayam Cemani

Good husbandry is essential for maintaining healthy Cemani chickens. Although the breed is often kept for its unusual appearance, its daily needs are similar to those of other domestic chickens.

Housing: Provide a secure coop that protects birds from predators and severe weather. Ensure adequate ventilation without exposing them to harmful drafts.

Nutrition: Feed a balanced poultry diet appropriate to the birds’ age and stage of development. Breeding hens and growing chicks may have different nutritional needs.

Water: Keep clean drinking water available at all times and clean water containers regularly.

Space: Allow enough room for movement, resting, feeding, and normal social behavior. Avoid overcrowding.

Hygiene: Keep bedding dry, clean the housing regularly, and remove accumulated waste.

Health monitoring: Watch for changes in appetite, activity, droppings, breathing, or feather condition. Seek veterinary advice if a bird appears unwell.

A well-managed environment supports healthy development and helps birds maintain good feather condition.

Breeding Ayam Cemani

Ayam Cemani is especially interesting to breeders because its pigmentation has a genetic basis. However, a successful breeding program should aim for more than the darkest possible feathers or skin.

Consider the following characteristics when selecting breeding birds:

• Strong, characteristic pigmentation
• Sound body structure
• Healthy growth and condition
• Good feather quality
• Reproductive performance
• Suitable temperament

Keep records of parent birds, pairings, hatch dates, growth, and the characteristics of offspring. These records make it easier to identify consistent traits and make informed breeding decisions.

Genetic diversity is also important. Selecting too narrowly for appearance can reduce the range of genetics in a flock, so pigmentation should be considered alongside overall health and sound breeding practices.

The darkest bird is not automatically the best breeding bird.

Is Ayam Cemani Suitable for Backyard and Farm Flocks?

Ayam Cemani can be kept on small farms, homesteads, and in backyard poultry setups when appropriate housing, space, nutrition, and protection are provided.

The breed may appeal to:

• Poultry keepers who appreciate unusual chicken breeds
• Specialty breeders maintaining distinctive lines
• Homesteads and small farms
• Poultry enthusiasts interested in exhibition
• Collectors of heritage and specialty poultry

Before acquiring birds, consider your available space, local poultry regulations, experience, and long-term goals. If you plan to breed them, make sure you can provide suitable facilities and maintain accurate records.

Ayam Cemani Rarity and Responsible Breeding

Ayam Cemani is less common than widely raised commercial chicken breeds and is often found through specialty poultry breeders. Its unusual appearance has contributed to demand among enthusiasts.

However, rarity and appearance should not be the only priorities when selecting birds. Responsible breeding also considers health, fertility, growth, temperament, and genetic diversity.

Buyers should ask clear questions about the birds’ background and any available breeding records. This is especially useful when establishing a flock intended to retain particular characteristics over multiple generations.
