Black Spanish Turkey Poults for Sale

Black Spanish turkey poults are young birds of a historic turkey variety recognized for their glossy black plumage and heritage background. Also known in the United States as Black turkeys, this variety traces its history to domesticated turkeys brought to Europe from the Americas in the 1500s. Black-feathered birds later became established in Spain and England before returning to North America with early colonists.

For poultry keepers interested in traditional turkey varieties, Black Spanish poults offer the opportunity to raise these distinctive birds from a young age. They need suitable brooding conditions, balanced nutrition, clean housing, and protection from predators as they grow.

About the Black Spanish Turkey

The Black Spanish turkey is a recognized heritage variety, valued for its dark plumage and long history in domestic turkey keeping. Its feathers are predominantly black, often showing a greenish or metallic sheen in good light.

The name can be confusing because the variety is also associated with the names Black Turkey and Norfolk Black. Despite these different historical names, the birds belong to the same general black-feathered heritage variety.

Key characteristics include:

• Variety: Black Spanish, also known as Black Turkey
• History: Established in Europe after domesticated turkeys were brought from the Americas
• Plumage: Black, often with a greenish metallic sheen
• Main uses: Heritage poultry keeping, breeding, and traditional turkey production
• Behavior: Active foragers, with temperament varying between individual birds
• Adult size: The Livestock Conservancy reports approximate mature weights of 27 pounds for toms and 18 pounds for hens

These adult weights are reference figures rather than a guarantee of the size an individual bird will reach. Genetics, age, nutrition, and management all affect development.

Caring for Black Spanish Turkey Poults

Young poults need a clean brooder with suitable warmth, dry bedding, and good ventilation. Protect them from drafts, damp conditions, and sudden temperature changes. Make sure all poults can reach their feed and water without crowding.

Provide a complete turkey starter feed formulated for young poults and follow the manufacturer’s feeding guidance. Fresh water should always be available in a suitable drinker. Keep feeding equipment clean and replace damp or soiled bedding regularly.

Observe the poults daily for normal activity, appetite, and movement. As they grow, gradually provide more space and prepare a secure outdoor area with shelter and protection from predators.

Feeding and Growing Conditions

Balanced nutrition and consistent care help Black Spanish poults develop properly. Use feed designed for turkeys rather than assuming standard chicken feed meets their nutritional needs. If you are unsure which feed is appropriate for their age, seek advice from a poultry-care professional.

Black Spanish turkeys are active birds and benefit from suitable room to move and forage as they mature. Provide secure fencing and appropriate roosting areas, since turkeys may fly or seek elevated perches. Their adult housing should offer protection from harsh weather while remaining clean and dry.

Planning for their mature size is important even when starting with small poults. Ensure you have enough space and the resources to care for the birds throughout their development.

Why Raise Black Spanish Turkey Poults?

Black Spanish poults may suit keepers who want to raise a traditional turkey variety rather than a modern commercial type. Their glossy black plumage and historic background make them distinctive additions to heritage poultry flocks.

They may also interest breeders working to maintain traditional turkey varieties. A well-managed breeding flock requires suitable housing, balanced nutrition, and careful selection of healthy birds.

Before purchasing, confirm the poults’ age, current availability, sexing policy, and delivery arrangements with the seller. Do not assume that specific ages, sexes, or quantities are available unless confirmed.
