Bourbon Red Turkey Hatching Eggs for Sale

Bourbon Red turkey hatching eggs offer poultry keepers a way to start their own flock from the incubation stage. Bourbon Red is an American heritage turkey variety known for its reddish-brown or chestnut plumage and contrasting white wing and tail feathers.

The variety originated in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and has been maintained by poultry keepers for generations. Raising birds from hatching eggs can be particularly useful for breeders who want to select future flock members as the poults grow.

About Bourbon Red Turkey Hatching Eggs

Bourbon Red hens produce turkey eggs suitable for incubation when they come from a fertile breeding flock and have been properly collected and handled.

Turkey eggs are generally larger than chicken eggs and have shells that can range from cream to light brown, often with small spots. The appearance of an eggshell alone does not indicate whether an egg is fertile.

For buyers interested in maintaining the Bourbon Red variety, the parent flock is an important consideration. Ask about the breeding birds and their characteristics if your goal is to raise birds that closely represent the traditional Bourbon Red appearance.

Why Choose Bourbon Red Hatching Eggs?

Hatching eggs can be a practical starting point for poultry keepers who want to raise their own Bourbon Red turkeys.

• Heritage variety: Bourbon Red is a recognized American heritage turkey.
• Distinctive adult appearance: Mature birds develop reddish-brown or chestnut plumage with contrasting white feathers.
• Breeding potential: Raising poults from eggs gives breeders the opportunity to evaluate young birds as they mature.
• Flock development: Hatching eggs allow keepers to begin with young birds rather than purchasing mature turkeys.
• Traditional poultry keeping: Bourbon Reds can be maintained as part of a heritage farm or homestead flock.

Hatch results are never guaranteed. Fertility, egg handling, storage, transportation, incubation conditions, and natural embryo development can all affect the final hatch.

Incubating Bourbon Red Turkey Eggs

Domestic turkey eggs generally require about 28 days of incubation under suitable conditions.

Before setting Bourbon Red turkey eggs, prepare and test the incubator. A forced-air incubator should maintain a stable temperature, and Mississippi State University Extension gives approximately 99°F as a general turkey incubation temperature.

Humidity, ventilation, and egg turning also need to be managed throughout the incubation period. Follow the instructions for your specific incubator and use reliable poultry incubation guidance rather than making large adjustments based on guesswork.

Good preparation includes:

• Cleaning and testing the incubator before setting eggs
• Handling eggs gently
• Following appropriate storage guidance before incubation
• Maintaining stable incubation conditions
• Turning eggs according to suitable turkey incubation instructions
• Monitoring development through candling
• Preparing a brooder before the expected hatch

If the eggs are shipped, transportation can affect hatchability. Allow for the possibility that not every egg will develop or hatch.

Caring for Bourbon Red Turkey Poults

Prepare the brooder before the first poult hatches. Young Bourbon Red poults need warmth, dry bedding, clean water, and appropriate turkey starter feed.

The brooder should be protected from drafts while still allowing suitable ventilation. Provide enough room for poults to move toward or away from the heat source.

Observe their behavior regularly. Poults crowding together may indicate that they are too cold, while poults consistently moving away from the heat source may be too warm.

Keep drinking water clean and accessible, and use a complete feed formulated for turkey poults according to its feeding instructions.

As the birds grow, increase their available space and provide secure housing that protects them from predators, severe weather, and other flock hazards.

Bourbon Red Turkey Breeding and Egg Selection

If the purpose of purchasing hatching eggs is to establish a breeding flock, pay attention to the parent birds as well as the eggs themselves.

A suitable breeding program can consider:

• Healthy parent birds
• Good body structure
• Appropriate Bourbon Red coloring
• Sound legs and feet
• Suitable temperament
• Reliable records of parentage

The final appearance of the poults will depend on genetics from both parents. Not every poult will develop exactly the same coloring or body characteristics.

What to Confirm Before Buying

Before ordering Bourbon Red turkey hatching eggs, confirm:

• Number of eggs included
• Current availability
• Parent flock information
• Egg collection and storage practices
• Shipping or collection arrangements
• Any available fertility information
• Policies concerning damaged shipments

Avoid assuming a specific hatch rate unless the seller has reliable records supporting it. Even fertile eggs can fail to hatch because of transport, incubation conditions, or normal biological variation.

How long do Bourbon Red turkey eggs take to hatch?

Domestic turkey eggs generally take around 28 days to hatch when incubated under suitable conditions. Actual hatch timing can vary.

What do Bourbon Red turkey eggs look like?
