Broad-Breasted Artisan Black Turkeys for Sale

Broad Breasted Black turkey for sale are valued for their dark plumage and substantial body type. Their predominantly black feathers give them a distinctive appearance, while their broad build appeals to poultry keepers interested in larger turkey lines.

The name can refer to a particular breeding line rather than a single universally standardized breed. For that reason, characteristics such as mature weight, growth rate, and reproductive ability depend on the birds’ genetics and breeding background.

At Rookcrest Livestock, we focus on specialty poultry for customers who want to understand the birds they are considering. If you are interested in Broad-Breasted Artisan Black Turkeys for a farm flock or breeding project, it is important to consider their size, health, housing requirements, and lineage before making a choice.

Appearance and Characteristics

The most noticeable feature of these turkeys is their predominantly black plumage. They also have a broad body, a developed breast, strong legs, and the bare head and neck typical of domestic turkeys. Skin color around the head and neck can vary with the bird’s condition and individual characteristics.

Their overall appearance distinguishes them from white commercial turkey types and from smaller traditional varieties. However, the exact shade of the feathers, body proportions, and degree of breast development can differ between breeding lines.

When selecting birds, look beyond appearance alone. Sound legs and feet, healthy feather condition, normal movement, and good general health are important considerations, particularly for larger-bodied turkeys.

History and Breeding Background

Black-feathered turkeys have a long history in American poultry keeping. Over time, different breeders selected birds for combinations of plumage, body size, growth, and farm suitability.

Broad-breasted black birds reflect an interest in combining dark feathering with a larger body type. The word “Artisan” may identify a particular breeding program or line, so buyers should ask about the source and lineage rather than assume every bird carrying this description has identical characteristics.

If you are purchasing breeding stock, information about the parent birds and the breeder’s selection goals can help you understand what traits to expect in future generations.

Size and Growth

These turkeys are described as broad-bodied birds, but there is no single mature-weight figure that can safely be applied to every line sold under the Artisan Black name.

Mature size depends on genetics, sex, age, nutrition, health, and management. Males generally grow larger than females, although individual results vary.

For customers planning a flock, ask the breeder for the ages and approximate weights of the available birds and, where possible, information about their parents. This is more useful than relying on a general size claim that may not apply to the specific line.

Because heavier birds need suitable support from their legs and feet, body condition and comfortable movement should be considered alongside growth.

Eggs and Reproduction

Like other domestic turkey hens, females produce eggs that are generally cream-colored and may have brown speckling. Egg production varies with age, genetics, nutrition, season, and flock management.

The reproductive characteristics of a particular Broad-Breasted Artisan Black line should be confirmed with the breeder. Broad-breasted body development does not, by itself, establish whether birds can mate naturally or reproduce reliably.

If you intend to establish a breeding flock, ask about the parent birds, fertility history, and breeding practices. Select healthy individuals with sound structure and suitable temperament rather than choosing birds on size or feather color alone.

Fertile eggs require proper collection, handling, storage, and incubation conditions. Fertility and hatch rates cannot be guaranteed.

Raising Artisan Black Turkey Poults

Young poults need a carefully managed environment while they grow. Provide an appropriate turkey starter feed, clean drinking water, dry bedding, suitable warmth, and good ventilation without exposing the birds to cold drafts.

Keep the brooder clean and make sure every poult can reach feed and water. As the birds grow, increase their available space and monitor their movement, appetite, and development.

Poults should move to larger housing or outdoor areas gradually, when their feathering, health, and weather conditions make the transition suitable. Protect them from predators and damp conditions throughout this process.

Housing and Daily Care

Broad-bodied turkeys need enough room to stand, walk, feed, drink, and rest comfortably. Avoid overcrowding, and make sure the floor and resting areas remain dry and provide suitable footing.

Fresh water should always be available. Feed should be appropriate for the birds’ age and purpose, with growing poults and mature breeding birds receiving nutrition suited to their different needs.

Outdoor access can provide additional space for movement and foraging when conditions are appropriate. A secure enclosure should include shade, weather protection, dry resting areas, and protection from predators.

Check the birds regularly for changes in appetite, movement, body condition, or behavior. Any persistent health concerns should be assessed by a qualified poultry veterinarian.

Temperament and Flock Management

Temperament varies among individual turkeys and breeding lines. Calm, consistent handling can help birds become accustomed to routine farm activities, but their behavior should not be assumed from the variety name alone.

When selecting breeding birds, consider health, leg strength, body structure, feather condition, temperament, and reproductive performance together. Keep records of parentage and growth where possible so that you can assess the results of your breeding program over time.

When introducing new birds to an existing flock, use appropriate quarantine and biosecurity practices to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Are Broad-Breasted Artisan Black Turkeys Suitable for Pasture?

Outdoor access can provide space for movement, exploration, and natural foraging. These benefits depend on the birds’ condition, the suitability of the environment, and the way the flock is managed.

For heavier birds, monitor mobility and body condition carefully. Provide secure fencing, shade, clean water, appropriate feed, and shelter from severe weather. Pasture can complement a balanced ration, but it should not be treated as a complete replacement for formulated feed.

The specific line’s body type and mobility should guide decisions about how much outdoor space and activity are appropriate.

Choosing Breeding Stock

If your goal is to establish a breeding flock, begin by confirming the birds’ lineage and the traits the breeder selects for. Ask about the parent stock, health history, mature size, and reproductive performance when that information is available.

Useful selection criteria include:

• Good overall health and condition
• Sound legs and feet
• Comfortable, normal movement
• Desirable black plumage
• Suitable body structure
• Manageable temperament
• Reproductive suitability for your breeding goals

Keeping records of parentage, growth, and breeding results helps you make informed decisions across generations. Avoid prioritizing body size or appearance at the expense of health and mobility.
