About Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey Poults

Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys are a commercial-type turkey variety derived from Bronze turkey genetics. They were selected for traits such as rapid growth, large body size, and substantial breast development.

Young poults have soft juvenile down and gradually develop their adult feathers as they grow. Their mature plumage has a bronze appearance with darker barring and markings.

Because these birds have been selected heavily for body development, their management can differ from that of heritage turkeys. Proper nutrition, housing, and access to clean water are especially important as the birds grow.

Why Raise Broad Breasted Bronze Poults?

Broad Breasted Bronze poults are primarily suited to keepers interested in raising large-bodied turkeys for meat production.

• Large body development: The variety was selected for substantial body size and breast meat.
• Rapid growth: They generally grow faster than traditional heritage turkey varieties.
• Bronze appearance: Mature birds develop the characteristic bronze-patterned plumage.
• Meat production: Their broad breast and body make them particularly associated with table production.
• Farm use: They can be suitable for poultry operations with adequate housing and feeding facilities.

Their body structure means they should be managed differently from lighter heritage varieties, particularly as they become heavier.

Caring for Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey Poults

Young poults need a clean, warm, dry brooder when they first arrive. Prepare the brooder before bringing them home so they have immediate access to warmth, feed, and water.

Provide:

• A dependable heat source
• Clean and dry bedding
• Fresh drinking water
• Complete turkey starter feed
• Good ventilation without drafts
• Enough floor space for the poults to move comfortably

Observe their behavior regularly. Poults that crowd tightly together may be too cold, while poults that consistently move away from the heat source may be too warm.

Keep drinkers clean and easy to access. Turkey poults require appropriate nutrition for their rapid growth, so use a complete feed formulated for turkeys and follow the manufacturer’s feeding recommendations.

As the poults become larger and more feathered, gradually provide additional space and move them into secure housing appropriate for their size.

Feeding Broad Breasted Bronze Poults

Nutrition is particularly important with Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys because of their rapid growth.

Use a complete turkey feed appropriate for the birds’ age rather than relying on ordinary chicken feed. Follow the feed manufacturer’s recommendations and make clean water available at all times.

Avoid encouraging excessive growth through inappropriate feeding. A balanced feeding program supports normal development while providing the nutrients needed for growing muscle, bone, and feathers.

Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey Growth

Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys were selected for substantial body size and breast development. Their growth rate is generally faster than that of traditional heritage varieties.

Individual growth varies with genetics, nutrition, sex, housing, and management. For that reason, a poult’s eventual adult weight should not be guaranteed from its age alone.

Their broad body structure also means adequate floor space becomes increasingly important as the birds mature.

Broad Breasted Bronze Compared With Heritage Turkeys

Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys are different from heritage varieties such as Bourbon Red, Blue Slate, and Black Spanish.

The primary distinction is their selection for commercial meat production and rapid growth. Heritage varieties are generally maintained for traditional characteristics, breeding, appearance, and the ability to reproduce naturally.

If your main goal is raising large turkeys for meat, Broad Breasted Bronze poults may be a better fit than a smaller heritage variety. If your priority is maintaining a traditional breeding flock, a heritage turkey may be more appropriate.

What to Know Before Buying

Before ordering Broad Breasted Bronze poults, confirm:

• Current availability
• Poult age
• Number of poults available

• Pickup or delivery arrangements
• Any specific care instructions provided by the seller

Prepare the brooder before arrival and make sure suitable turkey starter feed, clean water, bedding, and secure housing are already available.

If the poults are being purchased for meat production, plan ahead for the additional space and feeding requirements that come with their rapid growth.
