Chocolate Turkey Poults for Sale

Chocolate turkey poults are young birds from a rare American heritage turkey variety known for its rich brown plumage. As they mature, their feathers, shanks, and feet can develop the distinctive chocolate-brown coloring that gives the variety its name.

These turkeys have a long history in the southern United States, where they were once more common before their numbers declined. Today, they are maintained by poultry keepers interested in rare turkey varieties, traditional farm flocks, and heritage breeding.

About Chocolate Turkey Poults

Chocolate turkeys are recognized for their brown coloration, which can range from a lighter cocoa shade to a deeper, milk-chocolate brown. Newly hatched poults have juvenile down, and their adult feather color develops as they grow.

The Chocolate turkey is included on The Livestock Conservancy’s heritage turkey comparison chart under its conservation priority listings. Maintaining breeding flocks helps preserve this less-common turkey variety.

Because color genetics can vary between breeding lines, not every young bird will necessarily develop an identical shade. Buyers interested in maintaining consistent Chocolate coloring should ask about the parent flock and breeding history.

Why Raise Chocolate Turkey Poults?

Chocolate turkey poults can appeal to keepers who want to raise a distinctive heritage variety from an early age.

• Rare heritage variety: Chocolate turkeys have a documented history in traditional American poultry keeping.
• Distinctive appearance: Mature birds are known for their solid brown plumage.
• Breeding potential: Healthy birds can be evaluated as possible future members of a breeding flock.
• Farm use: Chocolate turkeys can be raised for traditional farm purposes, including meat production and breeding.
• Flock development: Starting with poults allows keepers to manage their early care and observe their growth.

Individual birds vary in appearance, size, and temperament. Select birds according to your flock’s needs and the characteristics you want to maintain.

Caring for Chocolate Turkey Poults

Young poults need a clean, dry, protected brooder with a dependable heat source. Prepare their housing before arrival so they can access warmth, feed, and water immediately.

Provide:

• A suitable brooder with enough room to move comfortably
• Dry bedding and good ventilation without drafts
• Fresh, clean drinking water
• Complete feed formulated for turkey poults
• Protection from predators and sudden temperature changes

Observe the poults regularly. Birds crowding together beneath the heat source may be cold, while birds consistently avoiding it may be too warm. Adjust the brooder conditions based on their behavior and an appropriate brooding guide.

Use turkey starter feed suitable for their age and follow the manufacturer’s feeding instructions. Keep drinkers clean and ensure every poult can reach food and water.

As the birds grow, provide secure housing with adequate space, ventilation, shade, and protection from predators and severe weather.

Chocolate Turkey Size and Growth

Chocolate turkeys are a large heritage variety. The Livestock Conservancy’s comparison chart lists approximate mature weights of 33 pounds for males and 18 pounds for females.

These figures are reference weights rather than guarantees for individual birds. Growth depends on genetics, sex, nutrition, age, and management. A young poult’s size should not be used alone to predict its eventual adult weight.

Providing appropriate nutrition and enough space as the birds grow supports normal development.

Raising Chocolate Turkeys for Breeding

Chocolate turkeys may be maintained by poultry keepers interested in preserving their distinctive color and heritage background.

When selecting future breeding birds, consider health, body structure, temperament, feather color, and the characteristics of the parent flock. Keeping breeding records can help track parentage and evaluate the appearance of offspring over time.

Since color genetics can produce variation, buyers seeking birds for a specific breeding goal should discuss the breeder’s line and selection practices before purchasing.
