About Narragansett Turkey Poults

The Narragansett is a recognized heritage turkey variety named after Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Its patterned plumage gives it a different appearance from solid-colored varieties such as Black Spanish and white-feathered commercial turkeys.

Narragansett poults start with less developed plumage and gradually acquire the characteristic coloring as they grow. Raising them from a young age allows keepers to manage their feeding, housing, and daily care throughout development.

As with any poultry purchase, confirm the birds’ source and the specific details of the flock before buying.

Caring for Narragansett Turkey Poults

Young poults need a clean, secure brooder with appropriate warmth, dry bedding, good ventilation, and constant access to clean water. Feed them a balanced turkey starter ration designed for their age, as young turkeys have specific nutritional needs.

Keep the brooder dry and avoid drafts. Provide enough room for the poults to move freely and reach food and water. Watch their activity and feeding habits closely, especially during the first weeks.

As they grow, move them into suitable housing with protection from predators and enough space to develop. A planned health and biosecurity routine can help reduce the risk of illness in the flock.

Why Raise Narragansett Turkeys?

Narragansetts are an established heritage variety for keepers interested in maintaining traditional turkey genetics. Their patterned feathers make them visually distinctive, and they can be considered by small farms and homesteads building a heritage poultry flock.

Their suitability depends on your available space, feeding budget, climate, and flock goals. If you plan to breed your own birds, ask about the breeding stock and its background before purchasing poults.
