Olandsk Dwarf Chickens for Sale

Olandsk Dwarf Chicken for Sale are a small Swedish breed with a distinctive appearance and an interesting place in the history of local poultry. Also known as Öländsk dvärghöna or the Öland Dwarf, these birds originate from Öland, an island off Sweden’s southeastern coast.

Their compact build, upright posture, and varied plumage make them appealing to poultry enthusiasts who appreciate uncommon breeds. For keepers interested in bantams and traditional poultry populations, the Olandsk Dwarf offers more than small size alone: it has a documented connection to Sweden’s local farming heritage.

At Rookcrest Livestock, we feature rare and specialty poultry for people interested in exploring breeds beyond the familiar backyard chicken.

What Makes Olandsk Dwarf Chickens Special?

The Olandsk Dwarf stands out for its small frame and varied appearance. Individual birds may display combinations of brown, black, white, and wild-type coloring, so the overall look can differ from one bird to another.

Their compact bodies and upright stance give them a recognizable profile. The breed is associated with a small-bodied or dwarf type of chicken, making it particularly interesting to people who prefer smaller poultry.

Rather than relying on size or dramatic features alone, the Olandsk Dwarf’s appeal comes from the combination of its appearance, regional history, and place among Sweden’s local chicken breeds.

A Swedish Breed With a Distinct History

The Olandsk Dwarf is associated with the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. Its documented modern population traces back to birds found in the villages of Petgärde and Asklunda in northern Öland.

These local birds form part of Sweden’s poultry heritage. Their history is important because traditional livestock populations can carry characteristics shaped by generations of local breeding and adaptation.

The Olandsk Dwarf has also been included in research examining Swedish local chicken breeds and their genetic diversity. Its conservation history highlights the importance of maintaining small and distinctive poultry populations.

The breed is therefore of interest not only to people who appreciate its appearance, but also to those who value traditional breeds and poultry diversity.

Appearance and Physical Characteristics

Olandsk Dwarf Chickens have a compact build, a relatively short body, and an upright posture. Their plumage can include several colors and patterns, commonly involving brown, black, and white.

The appearance of individual birds may vary, which is part of the interest for keepers who enjoy observing differences within a flock.

The breed is generally described as a small or dwarf chicken. Published descriptions may give different adult weight ranges, so exact weights should be checked against a reliable breed reference before being used as a purchasing or breeding expectation.

When selecting birds, look at their overall condition, activity, feather quality, and suitability for your existing flock rather than relying on appearance alone.

Keeping Olandsk Dwarf Chickens

Although these chickens are small, they still need the same thoughtful care as other poultry. Provide a secure, well-ventilated coop, dry bedding, clean water, and a balanced feed appropriate to their age and stage of development.

A protected outdoor area gives them room to move around and express normal foraging behavior. Fencing and predator protection are important, particularly where small birds may be more vulnerable to local predators.

If you plan to keep Olandsk Dwarfs with larger chickens, monitor the flock carefully. Differences in size and temperament can affect access to food, water, and safe resting areas. A gradual introduction and sufficient space can help reduce conflict.

For breeding projects, keep accurate records of parentage, hatch dates, health, and visible characteristics. This is especially useful when working with a rare breed whose preservation and consistent identification matter.
