Olandsk Dwarf Chicks for Sale

Olandsk Dwarf chicks are a rare Swedish landrace with a very small adult size, colorful plumage, and a distinctive connection to the island of Öland. Also known as Öländsk dvärghöna or Öland Dwarf, the breed is associated with birds from the villages of Petgärde and Asklunda in Sweden.

For poultry keepers looking for something beyond common chicken breeds, Olandsk Dwarf chicks offer the opportunity to raise these unusual birds from a young age and watch their individual colors and characteristics develop.

About Olandsk Dwarf Chicks

Olandsk Dwarfs are exceptionally small chickens. Swedish information from Skansen gives mature weights of approximately 0.6–1 kg for roosters and 0.5–0.8 kg for hens. The birds have a short, sturdy body and an upright posture.

Their appearance can vary considerably. Young chicks may develop into birds with different combinations of brown, black, white, gray, and other natural color patterns. This variation is part of the character of the landrace rather than a fault.

Because the breed does not have a tightly uniform appearance, raising chicks can be particularly interesting for breeders who enjoy watching birds develop over time.

What Olandsk Dwarf Chicks Look Like

Olandsk Dwarf chicks are small, but their adult appearance becomes much more distinctive as they feather out.

Common characteristics include:

• Very small body size
• Compact, sturdy build
• Upright posture
• Varied brown, black, white, and gray plumage
• Mostly smooth legs
• Active behavior
• Natural variation between individual birds

The Swedish population is recognized as a native poultry resource, and preserving these local breeds helps maintain genetic diversity in traditional livestock.

Raising Olandsk Dwarf Chicks

Like other young chickens, Olandsk Dwarf chicks need a clean, secure brooding area, appropriate chick feed, fresh water, suitable warmth, and protection from drafts and predators.

Their small adult size should not be mistaken for a need for less care. Young chicks still require careful attention while they grow and develop their feathers.

As they mature, provide enough room for normal activity and exploration. Sources describing the breed note that Olandsk Dwarfs are active birds and capable flyers, so secure housing is useful when keeping them outdoors.

Olandsk Dwarf Chicks for Breeding

Olandsk Dwarf chicks can be a good starting point for poultry keepers who want to establish or expand a breeding flock.

Since individual birds can develop different color patterns, breeders should evaluate young birds as they mature rather than choosing solely on their appearance immediately after hatch.

The breed’s small size and rarity also make it attractive to keepers interested in maintaining unusual poultry populations.

A Rare Swedish Landrace

The Olandsk Dwarf is more than a small chicken. Its history is tied to Öland, a Swedish island where local poultry populations developed over generations.

The breed was close to disappearing in the late twentieth century, and modern conservation efforts have helped maintain the population. It is not recognized by the American Poultry Association, and its landrace background means there is more natural variation than would be expected from highly standardized commercial breeds.

That history is one reason Olandsk Dwarf chicks appeal to collectors, breeders, and poultry keepers interested in rare heritage birds.
