Swedish Black Chicks for Sale

Swedish Black Chicks are young Svarthöna chickens from a rare Swedish landrace known for their striking black appearance.

The Swedish Black Hen is unusual because the dark pigmentation extends beyond the feathers. The skin, legs, beak, comb, and other tissues can also show deep black coloration. As the chicks mature, these distinctive characteristics become more noticeable.

At Rookcrest Livestock, Swedish Black Chicks are part of our rare and specialty poultry selection for customers looking to raise an uncommon chicken breed from a young age.

Why Choose Swedish Black Chicks?

Starting with chicks allows you to watch the Swedish Black develop from the early stages of growth.

The breed is relatively small and active, making it different from larger production chickens. It is also known for its dark pigmentation, foraging ability, and adaptation to colder Scandinavian conditions.

Swedish Black Chicks can be a good option for:

• Rare breed collections
• Small backyard flocks
• Specialty breeding projects
• Heritage and landrace poultry collections
• Poultry keepers interested in unusual genetics
• Customers who want to raise their birds from a young age

About the Swedish Black Chicken

The Swedish Black Hen is formally known as Bohuslän-Dals Svarthöna.

The breed is associated with the Bohuslän and Dalsland region of Sweden near the Norwegian border. Historical accounts trace its development to black chickens brought to Scandinavia and later adapted to local conditions.

It is considered a Swedish landrace rather than a highly standardized commercial chicken breed.

The breed became established in Sweden during the 19th century and remains uncommon today. Nordens Ark lists the Swedish Black Hen as endangered in Sweden.

What Do Swedish Black Chicks Look Like?

Newly hatched chicks are small and dark, but their complete adult appearance develops gradually.

As they grow, the Swedish Black’s defining characteristics become easier to recognize:

• Black plumage
• Dark skin
• Black or very dark legs
• Dark beak
• Dark comb
• Dark facial pigmentation
• Green or purple iridescence in mature feathers

The extensive pigmentation is caused by fibromelanosis, a genetic trait also found in several other dark-pigmented chicken populations.

Swedish Black Chick Development

Young Swedish Black Chickens change noticeably as they mature.

Their adult feathering develops gradually, and the deep black pigmentation becomes more apparent as their feathers, legs, and other features develop.

If you are raising chicks for breeding, evaluate them as they grow rather than judging the final quality of a bird entirely from its appearance immediately after hatch.

Important traits to watch include:

• Overall growth
• Body structure
• Leg and foot development
• Pigmentation
• Feather quality
• Temperament
• General health

Raising Swedish Black Chicks

Swedish Black Chicks need the same basic care as other young chickens.

Provide a clean, dry brooder with suitable warmth, fresh water, appropriate chick feed, and enough space as the chicks grow.

Keep the brooding area clean and dry, particularly as their dark leg pigmentation and feathering develop.

Once they are ready to move outside, provide secure housing, protection from predators, clean water, suitable feed, and enough room for normal activity.

Swedish Black Chicken Temperament

Swedish Black Chickens are active and alert birds.

Breed references describe them as hardy birds that are capable foragers. Some sources also describe the breed as calm and friendly, although individual temperament can vary between birds and breeding lines.

Early handling can help young birds become comfortable around people.

Swedish Black Chicks and Outdoor Flocks

The Swedish Black Hen developed in the Scandinavian climate and is known for its ability to cope with colder conditions.

The breed also has good foraging instincts and can be active when given room to explore.

For warmer climates, good shade, ventilation, fresh water, and protection from excessive heat are still important.

Young chicks should remain in a properly managed brooder until they are sufficiently feathered and ready for outdoor conditions.

Swedish Black Chicks for Breeding

Swedish Black Chicks can be raised as future breeding birds.

Because the breed is a rare landrace, breeders should consider more than just the bird’s black color.

As the birds mature, useful traits to evaluate include:

• Strong overall structure
• Deep pigmentation
• Sound legs and feet
• Good feathering
• Active but manageable temperament
• General health and vigor

Breed identity should also be considered when selecting breeding stock. Dark pigmentation alone does not establish that a chicken is a Swedish Black Hen.

Swedish Black Chicks vs Ayam Cemani

Swedish Black Chickens are sometimes compared with Ayam Cemani because both have extensive dark pigmentation.

They are not the same breed.

The Swedish Black Hen developed as a Swedish landrace and is smaller in type. Ayam Cemani originated in Indonesia.

Both share the fibromelanistic pigmentation trait, but they have different histories and breed identities.

Swedish Black Chicks at Rookcrest Livestock

Rookcrest Livestock focuses on rare and specialty poultry for customers who want to build flocks around unusual breeds.

Swedish Black Chicks offer an opportunity to start with young birds and watch their distinctive pigmentation and adult characteristics develop.

If you are interested in building a breeding flock, raising chicks also gives you time to observe their development before selecting future breeding birds.

Availability can vary according to hatch schedules and breeding season.

Swedish Black Chicks or Hatching Eggs?

Both options can be used to start a Swedish Black flock, but they offer different experiences.

Swedish Black Chicks have already hatched, so you can begin with young birds without managing the incubation process yourself.

Hatching eggs are better suited to customers who already have an incubator and want to manage incubation and hatch themselves.

If your priority is raising young birds rather than managing incubation, chicks are the simpler starting point.
