Olandsk Dwarf Chickens

A Tiny Swedish Breed With a Big Character

Olandsk Dwarf Chickens are small, distinctive birds with roots on the Swedish island of Öland.

Also known as Öländsk dvärghöna or Öland Dwarf, this rare Swedish local breed is recognized for its compact body, upright posture, and striking three-colored feather patterns. The birds can display combinations of brown, black, white, and wild-type coloring, giving individual birds their own appearance.

At Rookcrest Livestock, Olandsk Dwarf Chickens are part of our collection of rare and specialty poultry.

Their small size makes them particularly interesting to poultry keepers who appreciate bantam breeds and unusual birds.

What Makes Olandsk Dwarf Chickens Different?

Size is one of the first things you notice.

The Olandsk Dwarf is a true small breed, with adult hens generally weighing around 0.5 to 0.8 kg and roosters around 0.6 to 1.0 kg.

But their small size is only part of the story.

These chickens have a short, sturdy body and an upright posture. Their feathers are typically patterned with different shades of brown, black, and white. Their legs are usually smooth, although some birds can show slight feathering.

The result is a compact bird with a distinctive appearance.

From the Island of Öland

The Olandsk Dwarf Chicken has its roots on Öland, an island in the Baltic Sea off the southeastern coast of Sweden.

The birds now recognized as Öländsk dvärghöna came from the villages of Petgärde and Asklunda in northern Öland. Researchers studying Swedish local chicken breeds have also documented this specific geographic origin.

The breed belongs to Sweden’s local poultry heritage.

That history is part of what makes the Olandsk Dwarf more than simply a small chicken.

It represents a distinct local population that has been preserved as part of Sweden’s poultry heritage.

A Small Bird With a Distinctive Appearance

Olandsk Dwarf Chickens have a compact build and an upright stance.

Their plumage is one of their most interesting features.

Individual birds can show different combinations of brown, black, white, and wild-type coloring. This variation is part of the breed’s character and means that two birds may not look exactly alike.

Their comb is usually single, although rose combs can also occur.

The legs are generally smooth, with slight leg feathering appearing in some birds.

For anyone who enjoys unusual poultry, these details make the breed easy to appreciate.

The Heritage Behind the Breed

The Olandsk Dwarf is considered a Swedish local breed.

Its modern population traces back to birds found in Petgärde and Asklunda on Öland. The breed was also included in research examining the genetic diversity and relationships among Swedish local chicken breeds.

The breed’s small population has made preservation part of its story.

The Food and Agriculture Organization’s World Watch List previously classified Öländsk Dvärghöna as a critical Swedish local population, reflecting the limited population recorded at the time.

That history adds another reason for rare poultry keepers to take an interest in this little Swedish chicken.
