Wheaten Aseel Chicken

Wheaten Aseel is a distinctive variety of the Aseel chicken, an old breed from the Indian subcontinent known for its compact body, upright carriage, hard feathering, strong legs, and distinctive appearance.

The Wheaten variety is recognized for its warm golden and wheat-colored plumage. Males generally show stronger color contrast, while females tend to have softer cream and wheat tones.

At Rookcrest Livestock, Wheaten Aseel can be presented as a specialty poultry variety for customers interested in rare chicken genetics, ornamental birds, heritage poultry, and breeding programs focused on maintaining breed characteristics.

What Makes Wheaten Aseel Different?

The Wheaten color pattern gives this Aseel variety its distinctive appearance.

Typical features include:

• Warm golden or wheat-colored plumage
• Orange to golden hackle feathers
• Darker wings and tail in males
• Cream to wheat-colored females
• Compact, muscular body
• Upright carriage
• Short, hard feathers
• Small pea-type comb
• Strong legs
• Distinctive head shape

Aseel chickens are known for their tight feathering and compact body structure. Research describing the breed also reports predominantly pea combs and strong sexual differences in body size.

Wheaten Aseel History

Aseel is an ancient chicken breed associated with the Indian subcontinent.

The breed has been maintained for centuries in parts of India and neighboring regions. Different regional populations developed differences in body size, color, and other physical characteristics.

The name Aseel is also written as Asil or Azeel.

The Livestock Conservancy describes Aseel as a heritage chicken with a long history in India and notes that the breed has been known there for thousands of years.

Wheaten is one of the recognized Aseel varieties. Oklahoma State University lists Wheaten alongside Black, White, Dark, and Spangled varieties.

Wheaten Aseel Appearance

A mature Wheaten Aseel has a compact and upright appearance.

Common characteristics include:

• Wheat or golden body coloration
• Orange-golden hackles
• Darker wing feathers
• Darker tail feathers in males
• Creamer coloration in females
• Tight feathering
• Small pea comb
• Strong legs
• Compact body
• Upright stance

The exact shade can vary between birds and breeding lines.

The Wheaten pattern is particularly attractive because males and females can have noticeably different coloration.

Wheaten Aseel Size

Aseel is a relatively substantial chicken for its compact frame.

The Livestock Conservancy lists standard weights of approximately:

• Males: 5.5 pounds
• Females: 4 pounds

Individual birds can vary according to genetics, age, nutrition, and management.

Research on Aseel populations has also documented considerably heavier birds in some regional populations, showing that size can differ between lines and populations.

Wheaten Aseel Eggs

Wheaten Aseel hens produce relatively small eggs compared with commercial laying breeds.

Eggshell colors range from white or tinted shades to light brown.

The Livestock Conservancy lists Aseel eggs as small and white to tinted or light brown.

Aseel hens generally produce fewer eggs than specialized commercial laying breeds.

Their reproductive value is better considered within a breeding program focused on maintaining the breed rather than maximizing egg production.

Wheaten Aseel Chicks

Wheaten Aseel chicks require the same basic care as other young chickens.

A suitable brooding environment should provide:

• Appropriate warmth
• Clean, dry bedding
• Fresh drinking water
• Suitable chick starter feed
• Good ventilation
• Adequate space
• Protection from predators

As the chicks mature, their feather coloration becomes more recognizable.

Breeders can observe:

• Feather color
• Body structure
• Leg development
• Comb type
• Growth
• Temperament

Young birds should be handled calmly and consistently.

Wheaten Aseel Temperament

Aseel chickens can have a strong and assertive temperament.

The Livestock Conservancy describes the breed as highly aggressive toward other birds while noting that individual birds can be good with people.

Because temperament can vary, responsible keepers should provide appropriate housing and avoid overcrowding.

Young birds should also be socialized carefully.

When maintaining a breeding flock, temperament should be considered alongside health, structure, feather quality, and reproductive performance.

Wheaten Aseel Care

Wheaten Aseel chickens need a clean and secure environment.

Good care includes:

• Clean housing
• Fresh water
• Appropriate feed
• Dry bedding
• Secure fencing
• Protection from predators
• Adequate space
• Regular flock observation

The breed is also described as heat tolerant and suitable for free-range conditions when properly managed.

Wheaten Aseel for Free-Range Systems

Aseel chickens can adapt well to outdoor systems.

They are active birds that benefit from room to move and explore.

A suitable free-range area should provide:

• Shade
• Shelter
• Clean water
• Appropriate feed
• Secure boundaries
• Protection from predators

The Livestock Conservancy specifically lists Aseel as suitable for free-range keeping and notes its heat tolerance.

Wheaten Aseel Breeding

Breeding Aseel should focus on maintaining the defining characteristics of the variety.

Useful traits to consider include:

• Correct Wheaten coloration
• Compact body structure
• Strong legs
• Proper feather texture
• Healthy growth
• Correct comb type
• Good reproductive health
• Suitable temperament

Color should not be the only selection criterion.

Healthy birds with sound structure are better candidates for maintaining a strong flock over several generations.

Keeping parentage records can also help breeders track which birds consistently produce desirable Wheaten characteristics.

Wheaten Aseel Conservation

Aseel is recognized as a heritage chicken by The Livestock Conservancy, which currently lists its conservation status as Critical.

Maintaining healthy breeding populations can therefore contribute to the preservation of this distinctive chicken genetics.

Conservation breeding should focus on maintaining several characteristics rather than selecting only for appearance.

This includes:

• Breed type
• Healthy structure
• Genetic diversity
• Reproductive ability
• Appropriate temperament
• Characteristic plumage
